GEDCOM - What It Is.
Q. What is a GEDCOM?
A. GEDCOM is an acronym for Genealogical Data Communication. GEDCOM is a
"sharing" file, a means of exchanging or transferring information. Uses of
GEDCOM files include:
1. Sharing Genealogy: e-mail,
Pedigree Resource File, Internet, "Split" or trim a File.
2. "Downloading" (or obtaining files
from other sources): www.familysearch.org,
Pedigree Resource File, Relatives.
3. Preparing for
Temple Submissions (see Computer Guides #8-#10)
4. Combining Files: Import Files (be
careful), Export Files.
5. Exchanging files between differing
genealogy programs such as PAF 5, Family Tree
Maker,
Legacy, etc.
In PAF 5.21
The Export feature is used to create a GEDCOM
file.
The Import feature is used to bring a GEDCOM
file into your computer.
See Computer Guide #11b for GEDCOM procedures.
